In the Academic Art of Riding, all side movements are first taught to the horse in hand.

Shoulder in 6 300x168 Shoulder in: Teaching the exercise to the horse

This teaches the horse to move in side movements and find its balance without the additional weight of the rider.

Later on, the horse will find it easier to learn and execute the same exercise under the rider.

At first, a few steps are enough.

When the horse gradually becomes stronger a whole long side of the riding arena can be done in shoulder in.

I would love to have you do a dvd series with more details on how to achieve these exercises in hand. I really like the explanations you have and can understand what you are doing, but it would be nice to see a horse in training go from the very beginning of longeing and in hand work be prepared for riding with very detailed explanation as you go through the training.
There are so many people especially here in the US who would love to have your kind of instruction, but it is not easy to find someone with similar training and travelling to a good instructor once finding them is sometimes impossible to do.

If I lived in Holland I would be at your stable learning as much as I can. I love that the horse is given the time to learn and develope it’s body so it will come easier than pushing a horse to hard and to fast only to have a breakdown later.

Is this something you might be doing in future?

Thank you for showing us clear and concise instructional video.
My search for guidance on exactly what angle was clearly demonstrated along with the camera angle helps to have a picture in my head on what we are aiming for. Thank you . Beautiful

I have instructors and attend clinics but still did not have a clear picture of what the horse is supposed to do. Thanks again
